Dining Table Size Guide for Hong Kong Flats: What Size for 2, 4, 6 or 8 People?

The right dining table size in a Hong Kong flat comes down to two numbers: how many people eat at it every day, and how much floor you can give it, chairs included. This guide gives you both, with sizes for 2, 4, 6 and 8 people, the clearance you need around the table, and real tables from our showrooms at each size.

Quick answer: dining table sizes by number of people

People Round table Rectangular table Floor space needed (with chairs)
2 Ø 80–90 cm 80 × 80 cm about 2.3 × 2.3 m
4 Ø 100–120 cm 120–140 × 80 cm about 2.5 × 2.5 m (round) or 2.9 × 2.3 m
6 Ø 130–150 cm 160–180 × 90 cm about 2.9 × 2.9 m (round) or 3.3 × 2.4 m
8 Ø 150–180 cm 200–240 × 100 cm about 3.2 × 3.2 m (round) or 3.9 × 2.5 m

The floor space column adds 75 cm on each side of the table, the minimum to pull a chair out and sit down. If people need to walk behind seated diners, allow 90 cm on that side.

The three measurements that matter

  • 60 cm of table edge per person. This is a comfortable place setting. At 50 cm it works for a quick meal but feels tight for a dinner.
  • 75–90 cm from the table edge to a wall or cabinet. 75 cm lets someone sit down; 90 cm lets someone walk past behind them.
  • Table height 73–76 cm with seat height 45–47 cm. Most dining tables and chairs follow this, but check bar-height and lounge-height tables, which are much higher or lower.

Round, rectangular or extendable?

Round tables suit most Hong Kong flats

A round table has no corners to walk around, so it needs less clearance in a narrow dining area, and everyone can talk to everyone. A pedestal base (one central foot instead of four legs) lets you squeeze in an extra chair when guests come. The trade-off: above about 150 cm across, people on opposite sides are far apart and the centre of the table is hard to reach.

Rectangular tables suit long, narrow rooms

If your dining area runs along a window or a long wall, a rectangle uses the space better and can sit against the wall on one side for everyday use. It also doubles more easily as a desk.

Extendable tables suit almost everyone

Size the table for how you eat every day, then extend it for festivals and dinner parties. In a small flat this is usually the best answer: a table for 4 most of the year that seats 6 or 8 at Chinese New Year.

Tables at each size

For 2 people, growing to 4

For 4 people, growing to 6

For 6 people, growing to 8 or more

Before you buy: a five-minute checklist

  1. Measure the dining area wall to wall, then subtract 150–180 cm (the clearance on both sides). What is left is your largest table.
  2. Mark the table on the floor with masking tape and walk around it with the chairs pulled out.
  3. Check for pillars, bay windows, air-conditioner units and doors that swing into the space.
  4. For an extendable table, measure the room at the extended size too, and decide where the chairs will go.
  5. Check the lift and the turn at your front door; a large one-piece top may need to come up the stairs.
