Poul Henningsen's 1958 reply to the bulb
Poul Henningsen designed the PH 5 in 1958 in direct response to the constantly changing shape, size and colour of the bulb. The three-shade system creates fully glare-free, downward-directed light — a design that turns the bulb into a non-issue regardless of what generation of light source is fitted today.
Light concept
Pyramidal three-shade system. Each shade is mathematically derived to direct light downward and onto adjacent surfaces while completely concealing the bulb from any viewing angle. The result is soft, warm, glare-free illumination suited to dining and living spaces.

- Metals editions: Brass or copper. Both develop a natural patina over time.

Frequently asked questions
Which size suits my dining table?
The 50 cm PH 5 suits most round tables and rectangular tables for 4–6 people. For a small table for two, or for a long table or kitchen island, the 30 cm PH 5 Mini works better, often two or three in a row.
How high should a PH 5 hang?
Over a dining table, about 55–65 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the lamp. At that height the shades hide the bulb from anyone seated, and the light falls on the table. The 4 m cable is shortened to your height when we install it.
What is the difference between Classic White and Modern White?
Classic White follows Henningsen's original colour scheme: a small red cone and a blue reflector inside the shades warm the light, and the anti-glare disc at the bottom is blue. Modern White was introduced for the PH 5's 60th anniversary and has a rose anti-glare disc instead, for a softer, more contemporary look. Both are matt white outside and give the same glare-free light.
Can I use an LED bulb, and can it be dimmed?
Yes. The PH 5 takes a standard E27 bulb and the PH 5 Mini an E14 bulb, so any LED bulb of the right size works. With a dimmable bulb and a wall dimmer, the lamp dims.
