72 leaves, zero glare — Henningsen's 1958 masterpiece
Originally designed for the Langelinie Pavillonen restaurant in Copenhagen in 1958, the PH Artichoke remains the most ambitious of Poul Henningsen's lighting work. Seventy-two precisely-positioned leaves arranged in twelve rows direct every photon downward without revealing the bulb — a feat of mathematical light control as much as a sculpture.
Light concept
Each of the 72 metal leaves serves as both reflector and shade. From every viewing angle, the bulb is concealed; from every direction, the lamp emits diffused glare-free illumination. The lamp is meant to be both source and centrepiece.
Materials
- Shade variations: Painted (Soft White, Dusty Blue, Dusty Green, Black, White), or metallic (polished brass, copper, brushed stainless steel).
- Glass edition: Sandblasted clear glass leaves.
- Inner surface: Wet-painted white for soft reflection.
- Frame: High-lustre chrome or polished brass.
